PRANAYAMA, BASIC BREATHING TECHNIQUES
Yoga instructors will be taught a few breathing techniques which help pregnant women to calm down her mind, thus increasing her breathing capacity and tissue oxygenation, as well as techniques which may help her during labour and delivery, so as to lessen the pain of contraction.
YOGA PHILOSOPHY
From the point of view of philosophy, we’ll focus upon POST CLASSIC Yoga, after Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. In particular, we shall study in depth the Hatha yoga school, whose techniques are used for poses, breathing and meditation during pregnancy.
We shall study the philosophical meaning of Nidra Yoga, a series of deep relaxation techniques. The knowledge of Nidra Yoga will help the pupils understand what happens when using such techniques for pregnant women, and which advantages it offers in terms of energy.
ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY AND MUSCULAR-SKELETAL BIOMECHANICS DURING THE NINE MONTHS OF PREGNANCY AND AFTER CHILDBIRTH
During the course, we shall study what happens from the point of view of both anatomy and physiology during pregnancy.
Pregnancy will be divided into three terms, and each term into weeks, so as to follow the anatomical and physiological development of the phoetus/child, up to the 40th week. We shall see how the woman’s body changes during the nine months, and how hormones work. We shall describe the various kinds of delivery and labour.
We shall also explain the anatomy of childbirth, therefore pelvis, pelvic bones, physiology and anatomy of the pelvic diaphragm, and the organs of the female reproductive system. We shall study – from a physiological and anatomical point of view – puerperium, which starts immediately afterbirth (the final moment of delivery, about fifteen to thirty minutes after childbirth), and generally goes on for 40 days. We shall provide a few notions on exo-pregnancy i.e. the nine months after childbirth
PUERPERIUM
Immediately after childbirth, for about 40 days/ 6 weeks (puerperium stage), a woman should slowly reclaim her own body through easy relaxation poses. In this stage, a woman mostly needs rest, and yoga may help her with simple asanas, which may help her move her spine.
PUERPERIUM STAGE UNTIL THE END OF LACTATION
After the stage of puerperium, until the end of lactation – we should help women slowly get back to yoga practice: their bodies have suffered deep changes, and they need to recover very gently. We shall analyse several physical post-partum problems.
A particular attention will be paid to breathing, the back, the perineal area, and abs, which should recover tone through gentle poses.
BASIC/INTERMEDIATE YOGA POSES
During the course, we shall teach futuri instructors how to perform asanas and movements which make the spine supple and relieve common pains, such as low back tensions; there are also asanas which are effective in order to relieve women from heaviness in her legs and improve venous outflow; other asanas stimulate digestion, or drainage. We shall also study practices of vaginal contraction, in order to tone up the perineal floor and vagina muscles, which are very effective in order to make it stronger and more flexible for delivery, so that the mother is physically stronger, and emotionally calm and courageous, in case of problems, since she may recover her own energy.
Asanas will be divided into:
1st trimester, 2nd trimester, 3rd trimester of pregnancy, with all the adjustments and precautions which should be taken during practice.
RELAXATION TECHNIQUES
Deep relaxation techniques help a pregnant woman get free from daily tensions, so that she can relax her own muscles. Relaxation and meditation techniques release tensions, help women get in contact with their own needs and emotions, and make both movements and breathing fluent and harmonious.
TEACHING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES
Instructors/teachers will learn how to build up lessons in each trimester. During theoretical sessions, we shall provide handouts, with pictures and descriptions of the poses, as well as of the whole sequence, complete with breathing and relaxation stages.
Instructors will make practical experiences with tools, which should be used starting from the 5th month of pregnancy onwards. We shall indicate poses to be avoided during pregnancy, and in case of problems during pregnancy. At the end of the course, pupils will study at home and will prepare a basic sequence for each trimester of pregnancy. In the following class, they will demonstrate in practice the sequences they have studied and prepared at home.
ETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL ETHICS IN YOGA
We shall provide the basics for the teacher-pupil interaction, i.e. a code of conduct which every yoga teacher should follow. Teachers are required to know and apply this code, which is a guideline for teachers’ behaviour with pupils.
COURSE ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT
In order to teach Yoga, you must develop skills for the course organization and management. Also, you need a group of pupils and a teaching programme.
MOTHER-CHILD RELATIONSHIP IN PREGNANCY
During the course, we shall study in depth the mother-child relationship, which starts well in advance of childbirth, and affects the quality of the post-natal relationship. We shall see that the phoetus is not isolated from the rest of the world dal since, in particular in the second and third trimester of pregnancy, the sensory organs and the brain centres have already been formed and are working. During pregnancy, yoga helps the mother-to-be experience her own physical and psychological changes in a better way, thus paving the way for a harmonious development of the baby.
We shall address the problems which may arise during pregnancy, so that the future teacher may suggest that the new mother sees a gynaecologist eand/or another medical professional. The pupils will learn the differences among a low, moderate and high-risk pregnancy.
BASICS FOR AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PATH DURING PREGNANCY AND POST PREGNANCY
We shall handle the topic of the psychological path during pregnancy with the same attention paid to the physical aspects of pregnancy. The psychological path in pregnancy and after pregnancy must be considered within the framework of the imposing sensation of an “all-round” change, in which the woman plays the main role, together with her baby, and her own position inside both family and society at large.
